This guide will explain how to get an insurance agent license in every state, and focus on obtaining a producer license for the first time. An insurance agent license can open the door to a new career.

With over 2 million licensed agents in the U.S., according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, you’ll be in good company.

Read our comprehensive guide on becoming an insurance agent for the big picture of what’s involved in this career.

How much does an insurance agent license cost?

The price tag to obtain your insurance agent or broker license can vary quite a bit depending on which state you’re in. Most folks can expect to shell out between $300 and $1,000 when all is said and done. Here’s a breakdown of typical insurance license costs you’ll run into:

  • Prelicensing education: Before you can take the licensing exam, many states require you to sit through a certain number of hours of classes. These courses can cost anywhere from $150 to $300, depending on who’s offering them and whether you’re taking them online or in person.
  • Licensing exam fees: When you’re ready to take the state test, you must pay an exam fee. This can range from $40 to $150, depending on your state. Some places, like California, may also tack on a convenience fee of around $33.
  • Licensing application fees: Once you pass the exam, you’ll need to apply for your insurance license. This will set you back anywhere from $20 to $200 for state fees. Most states will require you to apply through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR), which has its own transaction fees.
  • Background check and fingerprinting fees: Many states require a background check and fingerprinting. Some areas include this in the application fee, while others charge $25 to $60.

Remember, these costs are to get your foot in the door. As an insurance agent, you’ll also need to consider costs for continuing education, license renewals and insurance coverage.
