Personal trainer insurance requirements

Personal trainers are almost always required to have insurance due to the risk of fitness-related injuries and incidents. You might need insurance to:

  • Win new business. Clients might ask you to have active insurance — usually general liability.
  • Hire employees. Most states require workers’ compensation.
  • Repair or replace property you own or rent. Protect your inventory, equipment and even the building that you lease or own.

Frequently asked questions about personal trainer business insurance

Here are some of the most common questions we get about personal trainer insurance. If you don’t find the answers you need here, our licensed, U.S.-based insurance advisors are standing by to help via online chat or phone.

How does business insurance protect personal trainers?

Our personal trainer insurance packages are designed to protect your business from a variety of risks and help you save money to grow your business. You’ll be protected from financial losses related to:

Damage to someone’s property

You accidentally drop a dumbbell at a client’s house and damage a wood floor. The general liability coverage in your insurance package would help pay for repairs.

Accidents that hurt someone

A client needs medical care after tripping and falling off a treadmill. Your general liability coverage would also come into play here by helping to pay for medical costs and legal fees.

Professional mistakes

You didn’t include a warm-up in a class and a student accuses you of causing an injury. Professional liability insurance helps you defend yourself if you’re accused of making a mistake that causes someone to lose money.

Workplace injuries

You have to take a week off after slipping on a wet locker room floor and straining your calf muscle. Workers’ compensation insurance with business owner’s coverage can help cover medical bills and lost wages. Workers’ comp is usually required by law if you have employees.

Damage to your own property

Your training equipment is stolen from the gym. Commercial property insurance can help with replacement or repair costs if your owned or leased property is damaged due to a covered event, such as a burst water pipe, fire, tornado or vandalism.

Do you cover online training? Other companies I have looked at cover online training as well.

Yes, our personal trainer policy does cover most forms of online training. In order to assess whether or not your model of online training is eligible for coverage on our policies, please call us at 855-222-5919 or email us at support@nextinsurance.com.

I need to add my gym as an additional insured. How do I do this?

To add your gym as an additional insured, go to nextinsurance.com and use the “Proof of Insurance” button in the top right corner. Once you log in using your email and zip code, you will be sent a verification code that will then allow you two options, a general-use certificate or a certificate listing a gym or studio. Choose the second option, enter the name and address, and the document will be delivered in a matter of seconds!

Is the policy good if I teach at multiple gyms?

Yes, your policy covers you for as many locations as necessary.

Where am I covered to train with this policy?

The policy goes wherever you train in the U.S., including your own home. It does not include standalone gym locations where you are the primary leaseholder.

What do I need to get an insurance quote online?

It takes about 10 minutes to get a business insurance quote online with NEXT. We’ll ask a few questions about your business — like what you do, your location, how many people you employ and the vehicles you use for work. You’ll choose your options and see prices. If you like what you see, you can buy online and get a certificate of insurance (proof of insurance) on the spot.

How can I get a certificate of insurance (COI)?

Once you have a NEXT policy, you’ll have 24/7 access to proof of your insurance (also called a certificate of insurance, or COI) via web or app. Log in to your account, download your COI instantly or deliver it via email or text at no additional cost. Get unlimited certificates and add an additional insured as you need them.

How do you file an insurance claim with NEXT?

If you’re a policyholder, simply log in to your account and file a claim. We’ll contact you shortly to go over the details. Our support team is standing by to help.
